REPORT OF PASTOR CHRIS BREKKE TO THE CHURCH COUNCIL

March 21, 2005

I.                     PASTORAL ACTS. In February there was 1 wedding (Carl Jepsen/Molly Danielson), 1 funeral (Harley Knutson) and 2 baptisms (Matthew & Noah Swenson).  Known hospitalized: Judy Larson and Janis Evers.  Visits/appointments with members or prospects: 21.  I took days 4-7 of my 2005 vacation.

II.                   GSC EVENTS.  High marks in February included: Harley’s funeral and lunch, Ash Wednesday, GSC congregational meeting, Game Night, the Melodrama and our Lenten Wednesdays, including the new Faith Mentor pairings.

To note and support in April: Dancing (3rd), Youth Lock-In (8-9th), Spring clean-up (9th), Youth Sunday (17th), Staffing Task Force meeting (18th), Gospel Choir here (23rd), 30-Hour Famine (29-30).

III.                  “POWER SURGE”

I’m in a pastors’ study group.  Our current book is Power Surge by Mike Foss. He emphasizes key leadership strategies like: clear (and written-down) mission and vision goals…”discipleship” not “membership”…focused tasks for committees, not meetings “ad infinitum”…mutual expectations and evaluation…letting the people be creative and empowered.

On this track, we at GSC could offer our space and help to the Synod for leadership training events. ??

IV.                LOOSE ENDS…(may be covered elsewhere)

a.       Our Boy Scout Troop has asked if we’d like a 14’ flagpole and flag on our site?

b.       I see that Our Saviors Lutheran in Rochester is exploring having a Columbarium (for burial ashes).  We’ve talked of this also here on our beautiful hill.  Let’s monitor this.

c.       Who needs a key?  We have them available.

d.       Kisses for Kids Fundraiser.  A 50/50 fundraiser for Rainbow School and the ELCA.  Rainbow School parents, students and Board members will sell Hershey kisses to the congregation on one Sunday, at the price of .25 per kiss or 5/$1.00.  Proceeds will be divided, with half benefiting Rainbow School and half going to support the ELCA.  This is a nationwide fundraiser the ELCA is doing, and Rainbow School would like to participate at all four of its member churches, Zumbro, Our Savior’s, Mt. Olive, as well as Good Shepherd. We are flexible on the date, but would like to do it before the end of the school year.  Thanks.

e.       We are underway with our Task Force on expanding our staff.  Thanks to Becky Bruinsma and John Kopp for leading.  We’ll give you an update.

f.         Should we still send reminder postcards for committees, or is email sufficient?

V.         We Know the Real Key!
