Minutes of the Congregational Meeting

Of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church

February 13, 2005

 

74 members were in attendance.  Sign-in sheet attached; quorum of 76 members was not reached.

 

              I.      The meeting was called to order at 12:30 pm by President John Kopp.

           II.      Devotions were led by Pastor Chris Brekke.

         III.      A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the 11/21/04 congregational meeting.  (George Price/Paul Evers)  Motion carried.

 

        IV.      Recognition and Reports

 

a.       The IHN “Open Arms Award” was presented to Kathy Lange, Mary Jones, Paul Claus, and Paul Willemssen.  This award, from IHN, recognizes those who have gone above and beyond in providing help and hospitality to guests of the Interfaith Hospitality Network.

b.      Annual Reports were reviewed briefly, with the following notes made:

                                                               i.      Mark Hannan encouraged all members to reach out to others, especially youth.

                                                             ii.      Donna Swenson, chair of Evangelism Committee, reminded all present that we are all responsible for evangelism.

                                                            iii.      The Evangelism, Learning, Fellowship, Worship and Adult Learning Committees are looking for additional members.

 

           V.      Financial Report

a.       Michele Saack noted that the total assets of the congregation are now listed on the balance sheet; and the interest rate on our building is 6.25%.

 

        VI.      New Business

a.       2004 “Other Relief” funds of $3,400.96 (designated on offering envelopes) will be given to Florida hurricane victims through the ELCA.  2005 “Other Relief” funds will be given to International Disaster Relief through the ELCA.

b.      Julia Accola, Bob and Sheryl Nassif, and Betty Lund volunteered to be delegates to the 2005 Synod Assembly (May 6 & 7). 

c.       Julia and Curt Accola and Beth Krolak volunteered to be delegates to the 2005 Annual Meeting of Good Earth Village on Feb. 20.

d.      Molly Schmidt, Becky Fluegel, Paul Evers, George Price, Marlene Lynn, and Sheryl Nassif volunteered to act as the Nominating Committee for 2006 Church Council members.

e.       Duane Grosz volunteered to be on the 2005 Audit Committee.

f.        Ideas from Table Discussions at last congregational meeting were reviewed.  These ideas have been evaluated and prioritized by council, committees and many congregation members.  (See printout of slides for detailed descriptions.)

g.       Visioning Plan

                                                               i.      John Kopp went over the goals and objectives of the Visioning process.

h.       Distribution of 2004 surplus funds was discussed.  Ideas included:  importance of seminary student support, global outreach, and local needs.  A motion was made and seconded to have the church council decide on the disbursement of the $12,000 surplus. (Guy Havelick/Brenda Booth)  Motion carried.

i.         Future staffing needs were discussed.  A work group is forming to address future personnel.  Anyone interested in attending and helping with this area is invited to attend their meeting on Thursday, March 10 at 6:30 pm.  Audrey Catalano, Assistant to the Bishop, will speak.  Call Becky Bruinsma for more details.

 

      VII.      Open Discussion was called for; none.

   VIII.      Closing Prayer—Pastor Chris Brekke.

        IX.      Meeting adjourned at 2:00 pm.
