9th Grade Summer Mentoring

Remember that your Summer Mentor packets are available in the GSC office or online at www.gscyouth.com for both Faith Mentors and 9th Graders.  Our advice: start getting together now so that you won’t be rushed to finish by the September 15th due date.

Some Familiar Faces at GEV

If you spend any time down at Good Earth Village this summer you might just recognize a few faces.  Eric Howe is working as a counselor for the whole summer and both Erik Mainz and Emily Howe will be spending time down there as Staff-In-Training as part of the three week SIT program.

“No Expense” Fundraising

Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”.  In recent years many non-profits have stopped selling candy, magazines, and frozen pizza and have begun working through Scrip Programs.  Scrip is “no expense” fundraising because the program requires neither the church nor the members pay any additional money.  The donations are made entirely by businesses.  What the church does is simply to pre-pay for anything they might purchase at these local businesses.  This allows the business know that the members organization it is supporting is also customers.

So, if you were going to purchase a $200 stereo system from Best Buy instead of paying $200 to the cashier at the store you would purchase a $200 scrip card (like a debit card) through church.  This is what you would give the cashier at Best Buy.  You still pay the same amount but the church makes a fair percentage (varies with each store).  Want to be a part of our Scrip fundraising planning?  Talk with Mark or Pastor Dave or come to our meeting on Sunday, August 5th at 6pm here at the church.

3-Year Old “Get Acquainted” Party

Children who will be three years old by September 1 and are attending Sunday School for the first time this fall, are invited to bring their parents to a “get acquainted” party on Wednesday, August 29 at 6:30pm, here at GSC.  Please call the church office at 289-1748 if you have questions.

Remember: Worship Times are Changing

On Sunday, September 9 Good Shepherd Church will be changing its school year Worship times to 8:00 am and 10:30 am.  The early service will remain at its summer start time of 8:00 a.m., and the late service will now begin at 10:30 a.m.  No changes are being made to the Saturday night service start time.  It is our hope that this small 15-minute change will provide a more welcoming time for Worship to begin for guests and visitors who attend GSC each Sunday.  Sunday School will be adjusted accordingly, and will take place from 9:15 – 10:15 am.  Don’t think of this as having to get up just a few minutes earlier, think of this as an opportunity to reach out and invite someone to GSC with you!

Hey Football Fans…

Are you interested in a Good Shepherd Fantasy Football League?  We would use an internet based format (e.g. Yahoo Sports), instructions on setting up your team and pre-ranking players would be provided, then we would let the system do the draft.  After that you would manage your team through trades, etc.  We might even get together a couple times during the season to talk about our teams.  Pastor Dave said he has never lost at fantasy football… up for the challenge anyone?  If interested, please email Scott Hansen at Hansen.scott.jtm@gmail.com by August 24th.  We would need to have the draft run on or about September 1st.  Let the season begin!

Good Earth Village Quilt Auction

Sunday August 19th at Good Earth Village.  This special event raises funds to help cover the cost of Camper Scholarships and help keep camp affordable for everyone.  175 Quilts and Quilted Wall-Hangings will be auctioned off starting at 1:00pm.  Worship at 10:30 with Quilt Review and Concessions to follow.  Quilts displayed in Log Lodge and auction held outside under the big-top tent.  Come enjoy a wonderful day at your camp, support the kids and go home with a cherished heirloom.  For more information  www.GoodEarthVillage.org or call 507-346-2494.

Our Small Group Steering Team is looking for additional members. Ask Me Where I’m Going, and Other Messages from Kids

Do you remember what it felt like to be a kid?

When you were a kid, were you eager for independence and freedom? Did you want encouragement to grow and try new things? At the same time, didn’t you need guidance, too, and want to be accepted just for being you?

Although kids today seem to face many more difficult choices than did previous generations, much of what they desire in life is no different from what we also wanted at their age. Search Institute® spoke with a number of young people in the process of developing In Our Own Words and Ask Me Where I'm Going & Other Revealing Messages from Today’s Teens, a series of posters and a book that highlight what children and teens want from adults. Here are some of the things they said (adapted with permission for age-appropriateness):

Try it...

For parents with children of all ages

  • Be a good role model.
  • Be honest with yourself; be honest with me.
  • Teach me acceptance and respect.

For parents with children ages birth to 5

  • Let me share my worries with you.
  • Don't yell at me for making mistakes.
  • Pay attention to me.

For parents with children ages 6 - 9

  • Do things with me.
  • Watch out for my safety.
  • Be the one who speaks out for peace.
  • Encourage me to give tough challenges my best shot.

For parents with children ages 10 - 15

  • Let me trust you with my secrets.
  • Take me seriously.
  • Let me take care of things when you know I am capable.
  • Show me you care about my schooling by coming to my teacher conferences—even if I don't really want to be there!

For parents with children ages 16 - 18

  • Talk with me.
  • Ask me where I’m going.
  • Accept me for who I am.
  • Negotiate new rules with me.
  • Let me still be a child at times.
