Good Shepherd – Church of the Month

The Christian Book and Gift Shop, 815 North Broadway, has chosen to feature Good Shepherd Lutheran Church as their ‘Church of the Month’ in July. The benefit to us is two-fold: 1) The publicity they provide allows us to reach out to the community, letting people learn about our church. 2) CB&G will donate back to our church five percent of every personal purchase we make there throughout the month. So be sure to visit the Christian Book and Gift Shop in July – and when you do, tell the sales associate that you attend the ‘Church of the Month’. They will credit our account with five percent of your purchase.

Can you help?

During the week of July 8-13, three camp counselors from Good Earth Village will be with us for a lively week of Day Camp! Would your family be willing to host these young people for an evening meal sometime during that week? Give Cynthia a call at 289-1748 to volunteer.  Thank you!

Fall Sunday School Teachers

The Education Committee is starting to organize Sunday School classes for the 2007-08 school year. Help is especially needed in some of our upper grades. Beginning this Sunday, there will be a display in the Narthex indicating openings where help is needed. Please consider this opportunity to help our young people grow in faith! Give Cynthia a call at 289-1748 if you have questions.

Are you…

... active in church, but want more?

... itching to put your faith into action and make a difference?

... looking for friends who have a vision like you?

If you answered yes, you should be a part of YSLI!  The Youth Servant Leadership Institute is a collaboration between Good Earth Village and our synod where high school youth are selected from across MN to work, to learn, and to play together.  These young people gather for one week during the summer and four retreats throughout the year for leadership training.  If you’re interested fill out the application (found at goodearthvillage.org) or talk with Mark or Emily Howe who participated in YSLI last year.

9th Grade Summer Mentoring

If you missed the informational meeting last Sunday please drop either Mark or Pastor Dave  a line to see what you missed.  Also, we are requesting that each 9th grader send (e-mail, call, mail, telegraph) us the name of their summer mentor before this Sunday, July 1st.  If you were with us on Sunday we have the name of your mentor from the meeting.  Mentor packets are available in the GSC office or online at www.gscyouth.com for both Faith Mentors and 9th Graders.

Mark Your Calendars

This past weekend a group of us helped build up the foundation for the new Youth United House.  As always it was a blast.  Saturday, August 4th is our next Habitat work day of the summer.  You must be 16 years of age to work with Habitat in this capacity.  Adults are welcome and needed for our build days.  Sign-up sheet located on the youth bulletin board.

Time and Talent Prizes

There are still three unclaimed prizes in the church office from the Time and Talent forms drawing. If you were one of the seven winners, please stop by the church office to claim your prize.

Handbell Update

Thanks to many generous donations, Good Shepherd is close to purchasing a set of handbells.  So far almost $8000 has been raised, and plans are being put in place to purchase the handbells very soon.

Also, there are still a few Butterbraids left for purchase.  (These are a great, easy to prepare breakfast treat!)  If interested, please contact Becky Bruinsma.

Confirmation Service Hours

Tenth graders “to be” are only a few months from being confirmed!  Many still need service hours.  If you are in need of service hours, GSC custodian Ellen Herder has some projects available at the church.  If interested, contact Ellen at church (289-1748) or home (289-5723).

Congratulations

Congratulations to the following youth who participated in the ELIJAH musical at the Covenant Church a week ago: Noah and Nick Hart, Luke and Stephanie Schmidt, Hannah Thompson, Sara Caflisch, Maddie Woodford, Logan and Kimberly Anderson, Greta and Caleb Van Loon.  They did an outstanding job!  Look for the video and pictures in the Narthex – coming soon!

Rochester Area Youth for Christ

For the 5th year in a row, Rochester Area Youth for Christ is taking orders for delicious Colorado peaches that will be delivered in mid August.  An 18-pound box (35-40 peaches) costs $28.  To place your order by July 27th, call Rochester Area Youth for Christ at 507-288-4567 or email it to: chowbaby@juno.com.  All money raised stays in Rochester to help fund RAYC’s ministry to high school and middle school teenagers.

The Vision Team Update

The Good Shepherd Vision Team has begun to gather, read, study, pray and think about who we are called to be as a congregation and discern where God might be leading us.  We are spending the first part of the summer reading and discussing Kelly Fryer’s, Reclaiming the ‘L’ Word: Renewing the Church From its Lutheran Core. The Church Council is also reading and studying this book at each council meeting.  The team encourages anyone who would like to read this book to do so, it is available at The Christian Book and Gift store, where Good Shepherd is the church of the month in July.  The team will continue to meet throughout the summer and will plan congregational events in the fall.  Looking ahead, we would like to have the new Mission, Vision and set of Core Values to share by our annual meeting in January.

Why do we have a Vision Team?  This group of people will lead GSC in discerning where God is at work in the world, and help determine how we can join God in that work.  Their goal through prayer, individual study, group study, interviews of Rochester leaders, and in leading several congregational events is to determine how we will thrive as a congregation of disciples, proclaiming the Good News through a dynamic, shared ministry.   In her book, Kelly Fryer noted that the ELCA Department for Research and Evaluation studied congregations over the course of ten years in search of what thriving, growing, vibrant churches had in common.  They came to the following conclusion, “The ONLY factor that really matters is whether or not a church has a clear enough vision of where God wants it to go that it is willing to do whatever it takes to follow wherever God leads.”

God is leading us and we are preparing ourselves to follow in an intentional and purposeful way. How do we participate in the process?  Pray for discernment, participate in congregational events as they happen this fall, listen to one another, to the needs of our neighbors, and to God’s voice.  May we faithfully follow God’s lead.

In Christ,

The Good Shepherd Vision Team
