Spring Clean-Up Day – April 14

The annual GSLC Spring Outdoor Clean-up Day is Saturday, April 14 from 9:00 am to 12 pm.  Cleanup projects include raking, trimming, cleaning around scrubs and landscape, spreading bark mulch around the church perimeter and trees, window cleaning, picking up  trash from church grounds, and clean-up of the outdoor worship area.   Please come and help freshen up the Good Shepherd building and grounds.   Come for any or all of this time period.  All help is greatly appreciated.  This is also a great opportunity to earn service hours for the confirmation students.

Bundles of Love

Dear Friends of Good Shepherd:
In April we will be focusing on the Change for Bundles of Love, a non profit organization.  Bundles of Love Charity is an all volunteer organization to help infants and their families.

They help in the following ways:

    1. Provide clothing, bedding and necessities for infants in need;
    2. Provide correctly sized clothing for premature infants of all sizes;
    3. Provide burial garments and keepsakes for families who have suffered the loss of an infant due to stillbirth, complications of birth, or illness.

One of our very own members sews for this organization!  Ask Jeaneen Alcorn for more information.  See www.bundlesoflove.org for more stories.

Note:  A couple of Sunday's this month will have the Change for Change flower on the move! Learn more about Bundles of Love!  Also, the flower will be ready to receive any loose change you'd like to share!

“No Expense” Fundraising

Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”.  In recent years many non-profits have stopped selling candy, magazines, and frozen pizza and have begun working through Scrip Programs.  Scrip is “no expense” fundraising because the program requires neither the church nor the members pay any additional money.  The donations are made entirely by businesses.  What the church does is simply to pre-pay for anything they might purchase at these local businesses.  This allows the business know that the members organization it is supporting is also customers.

So, if you were going to purchase a $200 stereo system from Best Buy instead of paying $200 to the cashier at the store you would purchase a $200 scrip card (like a debit card) through church.  This is what you would give the cashier at Best Buy.  You still pay the same amount but the church makes a fair percentage (varies with each store).

Adults or youth: want to be a part of our Scrip fundraising planning?  Come to our second meeting on Monday, April 16th at 7pm in the youth room:

Volunteer Opportunities

The Property Committee could use 2-3 volunteers for some unpaid, but greatly appreciated positions.  First, we are looking for volunteers to join the shoveling crew for next winter.  If you prefer “warmer” activities, 2-3 volunteers are also needed for the summer weekly mowing schedule.  Weldon Hanson is the contact person for the snow crew, while Scott Shaw is leading the mowing crew.  On both crews, volunteers only have responsibility for 1 week. In addition, the Property Committee will be dividing some of the iris plants from the flower bed on the south side of the church as these are becoming crowded.  These plants will be available to whoever comes first....   Our recollection is that these are predominantly the "purple bearded" variety of iris and as far as annuals go, are quite hardy and require little care during the summer other than some occasional weeding and watering.

Tanzania Mission Trip Fundraiser – May 20

Foursomes are now being formed for a golf tournament fundraiser to be held on May 20 at the Ferndale Golf Course in Rushford.  The tournament benefits the SE Minnesota Synod’s youth mission trip to Tanzania this summer.  Cost is $50 per golfer, and includes a dinner following the tournament.  Good Shepherd member Juliane Herder is one of the youth going to Tanzania, and can be contacted for more information at 289-5723.
