Congregational Conversations are Coming!

This week every member household of Good Shepherd Church will be receiving a letter regarding a Congregational Conversation.  Beginning Ash Wednesday and continuing throughout the Lenten season, we will meet together as a congregation to begin the process of shaping the future of the ministry and faith community at GSC.  We look to every member of this congregation to be involved.

The Congregational Conversations will provide an opportunity to connect with one another and begin the process of envisioning the direction and long term impact of our ministry in Rochester and beyond.  This time will not be used for financial requests. Please respond to the mailing as soon as you are able. A member of the Congregational Conversation Ministry Team will be calling you to confirm the date and time of your gathering.

Scrip = Easy Fundraising

Want to be either the brains or the brawn of our new Scrip fundraising?  Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”.  In recent years many non-profits have stopped selling candy, magazines, and frozen pizza and have begun selling scrip.  So, if you were going to purchase $100 worth of groceries from HyVee in any given week instead of paying $100 to the cashier you would buy a $100 scrip card (like a debit card) at church.  You still pay the same amount but the church would make a fair percentage (varies with each store).  Talk with Mark if you’d like to help get this program off the ground.  The youth will do the grunt work of selling scrip but we’ll need adult help in educating the congregation, ordering scrip, and keeping track of inventory.

Theological Opportunity

There is still room available for Adults and youth wanting to go on our Spring Break mission trip to Oceans Springs, Mississippi to help rebuild the area affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.  Talk to Mark presently as we need to send in our final registration soon.  Info at www.gscyouth.com/springbreaktrip.html

No Youth Group

Youth Group will be taking a week off on Wednesday, January 31st as Mark will be attending an ELCA Youth Ministry conference for part of the week.  Ideally, Youth Group would be lead by a team of a couple adults working with Mark and would then be able to continue in the event of occasional scheduling conflicts.  If you are an adult who might be interested in co-leading this group with Mark please give him a ring :)

Theological Opportunity

Do you like thinking and talking about God?  Talk with Mark about putting your name in for Augsburg College’s Summer Theological Institute.  They are only taking a few students but it is an all-expense paid week of room, board, experience, and theological education by some fine professors.  For youth completing grades 10-12.

Middle School Ski Trip

There are still 5 spots remaining for our Middle School ski trip to Spirit Mountain in Duluth, MN.  You can reserve you spot by getting your $75 deposit in to the GSC office. More information at: www.gscyouth.com/jrhighskitrip.html

Evangelical Lutheran Worship

On Sunday, January 28, the new Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) books will replace the LBW and WOV books that are currently in our Sanctuary chairs.  Both services on Jan. 28 will begin with a litany dedicating these books.  Plan to come to worship early on Sunday, Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 for an opportunity to sing some of your favorite hymns from the new “red” book!

ELW Sunday Forum

On Sunday, February 4 at 9:45am, there will be a forum in the Sanctuary to take a closer look at some of the numerous resources available in ELW.  You will discover that it’s much more than 893 hymns and 10 liturgies!  Come and learn the history behind some of our hymnbooks and what has led us to this new worship book.

Kitchen Items

The following people have pans that can be picked up in the kitchen: Lyn Smith, Heather Willman and Judy Olness.  Two pie pans are left from Thanksgiving.  Also, there are numerous containers in the kitchen from food taken to the Lee family.  Please pick up these items when you can.

Care Group Prayers

As a way to remember God’s unfailing gifts of love and healing, our regular worship on February 10 & 11 will provide an opportunity for healing prayers, either silently or supported by others.  Please come and be a part of this special opportunity.
