This Wednesday (July 26), GSLC will host
a “Carnival Night.” We will have a potluck supper and the kids
can enjoy lots of carnival games hosted by the GSLC youth. Kids will be busy collecting lots of prizes
while you chat with Pastor Dave and other GSLC folks. Coming on August 2 is a “Corn Feed and Watermelon Feast.” We will be cooking up lots of fresh sweet
corn and slicing lots of watermelon.
Join us for this cool summer supper and enjoy music by our own Mark
Hannan.

ceremony. If you would like to ask specific questions of one of our
current coordinators, call Meg McCamish 280-4339. If you would like to
serve as a coordinator, call Vicky Mulvihill (281-3052.)

Take a Flying Leap!
I have heard that an African impala can jump to a height of over 10
feet and cover a distance of greater than 30 feet. Yet these amazing animals
can be kept in an enclosure in any zoo with a 3-foot wall. The animals will not
jump if they cannot see where their feet will fall. Faith is the ability to
trust what we cannot see, and with faith we are freed from the flimsy
enclosures of life that only fear allows to entrap us.
As a faith community and in our individual lives we are continually
called and challenged to take leaps of faith into the unknown and unknowable,
trusting that God will provide. We
remember this in the jobs we take and the budgets we make. Our faith influences each and every aspect of
our lives. Yet sometimes we allow fences
to creep up and our courage wavers.
These times will come and come again.
Remember – through faith, no small cage can keep us boxed in, through
faith in God all things are possible. This week (and beyond) may we be bold in
our faith, listen to God’s call, trust that God will provide and leap… knowing
that wherever we land it will be in the arms of our Lord.
COMING SOON— ELW!
The
letters, ELW are an abbreviation for
Evangelical Lutheran Worship, the
new hymnal that will soon be available to all ELCA congregations.
For
the past 5 years, the ELCA has been working on renewing worship materials for
the church. These resources have been
carefully studied by many congregations and were approved for publication at
the Churchwide Assembly in
Why do we need a new hymnal?
Lutheran
Book of Worship (LBW) was published in 1977 and With One Voice (WOV) in
1995. In the last 25 years, much has
changed in our churches and resources for worship have multiplied. A new hymnal will gather the best of these
resources for use by the whole church and yet include much that we already know
and cherish from existing resources.
Will my favorite hymns be included in ELW?
The
new hymnal will include 10 liturgies; including setting 1 and 2 from Lutheran
Book of Worship. 53% of the hymns are from
LBW, 20% are from With One Voice, and 21% are new hymns from Renewing Worship
(many of which we have sung the past couple of years). All total, there will be 650 hymns and
worship songs in the new book.
What color is the new book?
Cranberry
red!
How will we purchase the hymnals?
The
Worship Committee and Church Council have approved the purchase of ELW. Each book will cost $20 and all members will
have the opportunity to purchase a book in honor/memory of someone. Watch for the colorful display board that
will be in the Narthex in the next few weeks and help us reach our goal of at
least 300 new books by
October 1!
When will we start using ELW?
The
Worship Committee will be discussing a possible timetable for introducing ELW
to our congregation at one of its next meetings. The book will be published this fall and the
Synod is offering several workshops to introduce it to congregations. My hope is that several of our members will attend
to become more familiar with ELW.
In
September I will be offering an Adult Forum to answer more questions and to
provide background information on the development of this hymnal. I hope you will join me. If you have questions before this time,
please don’t hesitate to call.(289-1748)
I’m very excited about the future of singing in our ELCA congregations!!
